Making the road safer with connected car devices
Normally one would focus on cars when the serious subject of safety on the road arises, but now there will be as much focus on the people surrounding the cars.
Why? Well the number of fatal accidents that include pedestrians and cyclists are on the rise.
While this is not an immediate solution to the problem, Jim Sayer, a research assistant in the human factors group at the University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute, says technology that protects the most vulnerable will evolve alongside connected-car technology.
To protect pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists researchers are in the process of creating chips (that will be built into cell phones) and apps for cell phones that can monitor and communicate the position of all road users in a connected-car environment. There are other devices people can use that have the same outcome, but people frequently forget them or the battery is flat when they need to use those devices.
