N2 is South Africa’s highway to hell
A British motoring company, Driving Experiences, has made an interactive map of the most dangerous roads in the world- and the N2 is right at the top of the list at number 5! The N2 route is about 2230km long, along South Africa’s coastline from Cape Town to Ermelo, the 230km stretch between Mthatha and East London is the most dangerous section. Tied with us at number 5 are some notorious routes in the United States, Ukraine, Mexico, Philippines and Greece.
This statistic is not due to the condition of the road (although that might have an influence in some cases), but more the inconsiderate drivers, broken-down vehicles and roaming animals. It’s nerve wrecking to know that South Africa has some of the unsafest roads- due to other drivers. The only other road in Africa which makes the list is the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway in Kenya, which is one place ahead of us in 4th place.
Be sure to be extra vigilant when travelling the N2 on a long journey.
