Do you drive alone? This is what you need to know to keep safe
Solo women drivers are very often targeted by criminals – especially at night. Studies show that ladies tend to be less aware and alert than our fellow guys. Our body language indicates that we are more vulnerable. Here are our top tips for keeping safe:
1. Look Alert– Always keep your body in an upright position and look attentive when walking to your car alone.
2. Bumper Bash – If you experience a light bumper bash at night or on a quiet road, keep moving! It could be a scam to attack you.
3. Potholes or Unknown Items – Stick to main roads if you can, as side roads are often unlit, making it hard to spot a pothole. If you do hit one, no matter how bad the damage, do not stop.
4. Breakdowns – If you break down alone or with kids in the car, late at night or on a quiet road, stay in your car, and keep doors locked and windows closed. Call a company such as AA to send help and roadside security while you wait. Then phone a friend or your family to tell them where you are.
5. Be On the Move – If you are getting into your car after shopping, visiting a friend, or a party, don’t sit and linger in your car and check your phone or scramble around in your handbag. This only gives the predator more time to check you out.
6. Parking– Planning to head home alone at night? Park in a well-lit and secure area.
7. Don’t Stop – If you are alone, do not stop to assist motorists who appear to be injured or experiencing problems, even if there are children involved. It may be a set-up to rob or attack you. Just drive on. Same goes for hitchhikers.
8. Keys – Don’t leave your keys in your car and walk away, even if it’s just for a minute to run an errand, open a gate or buy a latte.
ALSO NOTE: If you suspect that you are being followed or you have car trouble or a flat tyre late at night, drive to the nearest public place or police station.
And remember to always keep your valuables out of sight of hawking criminals.
