Smart driving is the way to go on our wintry, wet roads
This weather, especially if you are in Cape Town, is wet, wet, wet! And although we gave you our 14 tips for driving in the rain recently, we thought that with the weather not getting any better, a few more tips and a refresher would be a good idea.
1. Approach bridges, shady areas and overpasses with caution as they might still be wet even though the rest of the road seems dry.
2. Beware of hydroplaning (when your car tyres lose contact with the road and slide on a thin layer of water). If you think your car is hydroplaning, ease your foot off the accelerator and avoid sudden steering or braking!
3. Be aware of the road surface on which you are travelling. Deep shade can obscure hazards that could cause an accident.
4. Turn on your headlights when driving in fog, but not to full brightness as this will decrease visibility further.
5. If fog becomes too dense to see, get off the road and stop (also turn on your hazards). Driving along the road at really low speeds can be as dangerous as speeding, as drivers coming faster from behind may not see you and could drive into you.
