What every woman should have on her phone this holiday
Your phone should carry more than just WhatsApp, Facebook and other social media applications. It’s pretty much the one thing that we all carry on us all the time, it should serve a bigger purpose than just a communication tool. Here are some essential things and apps that we should all have on our phones this holiday season.
1) Emergency numbers
You never know when you will find yourself in need of an emergency service. There are many, but the one that’s easiest to remember and store in your cell phone is 112 or 911. 112 works from both landline and mobile phone while 911 works only from a cell phone. You don’t even need signal or airtime when you use these numbers. This will take you to a call centre and they will send whatever emergency response you need. Enter this into your phonebook now and while you’re at it, enter an “ICE contact”. This is when you type a number of a loved one under the heading of ICE (In Case of Emergency). For example, “ICE mom”, “ICE dad”, “ICE Uncle Sam”. This is in case something happens to you and the first responder of the emergency team needs to notify one of your loved ones.
2) Uber service
For those times when you can’t drive yourself home and you need a quick, realiable and safe way to get home. Search for “Uber” in your respective store (iTunes, Playstore) and download the app from there.
3) Flashlight app
Barely anyone I know travels around with a flashlight, but everyone can if they download an app for it. There are many so search for it and choose one that you like the best. This will come in handy if you’re stuck on the side of the road and you need some light to see what’s wrong with your car (unless you’re alone, in which case we don’t recommend that you get out of your car). It’s also good for load shedding and you need to locate all your candles around the house.
4) Navigation app
This comes pre-loaded on most smart phones and is very handy to have. Keep it at hand if you’re driving around in an area that you’re unfamiliar with, and only operate when it’s safe to do so.
5) A fuel consumption app
Keeping track of your consumption could result in a more concerted effort to save fuel and, therefore, keep your costs down this holiday season. Take not of how much you use and if it’s steep, change your driving style accordingly.
6) Caltex station locator app
On the topic of fuel, it’s always good to know when your next fill-up will be or if there’s a station close to you. This app shows you where the Caltex service stations are. We weren’t able to find any other station location apps for other fuel providers.
7) SAPS station finder app
Who knew our police had an app? This handy application points out your closest police station and ones in areas surrounding you. You never know when you’ll need to find one.
8) AA South Africa app
If you’re a member of the AA, this will be of service to you. You can get access to the AA in the case of a breakdown, guidance when you’re at the scene of an accident and instant access to roadside assistance.
