Traffic law enforcement on high alert for payday weekend
Last year research by the Institute for Security Studies showed that on average 7 more people die on our roads on payday weekends than on other weekends.
According to Arrive Alive this will be taken into consideration as well as the public holiday on Monday, which means that drivers will be rushing to get to their destinations, raising the level of potential danger on the roads.
“The Department of Transport and Public Works is appealing to motorists to not drink and drive during the upcoming PayDayBlues weekend, not to speed and to ensure that all occupants are buckled in at all times. Do you not use your cell phone while walking or driving. Road users and alcohol don’t mix, whether you are a driver or a pedestrian,” said Arrive Alive.
Earlier this month a graphic but powerful TV ad called The First Kiss was launched by Western Cape Government’s Safely Home campaign. The ad, which was shared over social media and other public forums, showed the tragic consequences of failing to wear a seatbelt.

The result of the ad campaign in relation to the influence it had on road fatalities in South Africa are currently being measured.
Traffic law enforcement officials will be on high alert this coming long weekend to ensure that all road users will play their part by practicing safe driving behaviours.
