Western Cape car hijackings up 32%
A recent report published by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) on carjacking figures in South Africa revealed that the Western Cape’s car hijacking numbers are up by an alarming 32%.
South Africa as a whole is at a 14.4% year-on-year increase for car hijackings with the biggest increase taking place in the Northern Cape (213.3%).

These worrying figures represent the 12 months between April 2015 and March 2016, and according to ISS, do not reflect the positive change that has been happening in the SAPS.

‘Better use of crime intelligence, with support from experienced detectives and forensic capacity will go far in reducing these crimes. A good example is the success in tackling truck hijacking following the appointment of a dedicated task team,’ says Dr Johan Burger at the ISS.
