5 things you should stop doing on the road right now!
If driving is part of your daily routine, it’s probably become second nature to you and you can do it without thinking. However, this has its dangers and you can end up in a life-threatening situation. Here are the top 5 things you should definitely stop doing on the road right now:
1. Leaving your car door open to the street
Not only are you putting your car door at risk – a taxi has once driven into my car door while I had left it open in a parking spot on the street (yes this really happened) – you are also inviting criminals to potentially mug you. Leaving any of your car doors open is a bad idea and you should stop doing it immediately. And lock them as well!
2. Road rage
People driving while they are upset is a common occurrence and you don’t have to have been upset by another driver to experience road rage. You might simply have had a bad day. Driving in this state is dangerous and causes distraction, which, in turn, affects a driver’s ability to concentrate. If you do become upset with another driver, you may tend to start driving aggressively which is an accident waiting to happen.
3. Not paying attention while driving
It’s easy to forget that you’re on the road while you’re listening to your favourite song on the radio, and you could even become totally unaware of your surroundings – especially in traffic. But, unfortunately this is really dangerous and everybody should make an effort to stay alert on the road.
4. Using your phone or tablet while driving
Everybody knows that texting, taking a phone call or taking a selfie while driving is dangerous, not to mention illegal, yet countless people do it. It not only averts your attention, it means you aren’t focused on the road, and your hands are not on the wheel – which are the important things you need to stay safe on the road. And you are breaking the law!
5. Driving on an empty tank
Surprisingly a lot of people are being daring and driving on an empty tank of petrol – this is not good for you or your car! Mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith said that highway safety was not the responsibility of the police alone. “I want to urge motorists to safeguard their wellbeing and that of their passengers by ensuring they have enough petrol before they set off – and not just on the highways, because opportunistic criminals can strike anywhere and at any time,” Smith said. There are loads of drivers who call for help from very dangerous roads at nightly hours due to having no fuel. You don’t want to be one of them, do you? You are putting yourself at risk if you’re driving on an empty tank.
