There is much to explore in South Africa, including an array of exciting car museums. For those wanting to catch a glimpse of stylish cars of the past, here are some epic museums you need to visit.
Franschhoek Motor Museum
If you’re visiting the Western Cape, the Franschhoek Motor Museum is a must-see. The museum over a century of automobile history and has a collection of over 220 cars. From an 1898 Beeston motor tricycle to a 2003 Ferrari Enzo supercar, there are over 80 exhibits to marvel over. The museum is currently closed and will reopen to the public on January 15 2021. Visitors are allowed by appointment only due to the ongoing global pandemic.

Wijnland Auto Museum
The Wijnland Auto Museum will make your vintage car dreams come to life. Located in Cape Town, this museum is packed with classic cars, sports cars and even an airplane! The James Hall Museum of Transport
The James Hall Museum of Transport, located in Johannesburg, is the largest transport museum in Africa. Although it is temporarily closed, it should definitely be on your to-do list for when it reopens. Founded in 1964, the museum is packed with historical revelations that shaped the way we use transport in the 21st century. The collection includes animal-drawn vehicles (1870-1910), bicycles and Motorcycles (1786-1960), buses and Coaches, fire engines and equipment (1877-1960), Motor Cars (1900-1980), steam-driven vehicles and trams and trolley buses (1896-1986).

Outeniqua Transport Museum
The Outeniqua Transport Museum situated in George houses 13 steam locomotives for an enchanting trip into the past. One of the exciting attractions includes Johannesburg’s first ever steam locomotive. While it isn’t a car museum per se, there is also a model train room, road motor vehicles and a private vintage car selection to experience. This museum is an exciting way to spend a few hours familiarising with old world transport.
