Why you should choose driving over flying this holiday season
If you are planning on being somewhere in Southern Africa this holiday season, we strongly recommend that you choose to turn your trip into a road trip instead of traveling by plane. You might be wondering ‘WHY?’, as flights can be considerably more affordable than driving, especially if you are travelling alone.
Wherever you plan on going this festive season, here are the reasons you should rather be driving instead of flying…
The BIG reason for our enthusiasm on driving rather than flying is the environmental impact airplanes have on the earth. There’s no getting around it – planes have much larger carbon footprints than other forms of transportation. Air travel is one of the biggest individual contributors to climate change, so ‘eco-conscious’ travellers should avoid flying unless it’s absolutely necessary.
There are also small adjustments you can make to your road trip in order to make it even greener – avoiding overloading, keeping your maintenance up to schedule, and keeping all of your litter until you have a chance to recycle it.
Except for this reason, there are a few other big upsides to driving rather than flying. When you go on a road trip, you can actually end up saving money. If you go on holiday with a car, you won’t have to hire a car when you get to your destination (which can be pretty expensive, and can have its repercussions). You can also save money by driving along with other people or taking a family road trip.
Driving also lets you dictate what route you’re going to take. If you want to stop at an interesting roadside cafe, make an unexpected overnight stop or even take an impractical scenic route, there’s no-one to stop you.
This way you can also experience South Africa. No good stories has ever come from a flying experience, has it? Driving let’s you really enjoy the journey. You can experience the country and enjoy the scenery, and you won’t have to tell a story about how you we’re once stuck between two crying babies for two hours on a plane.
If you’re not that keen on driving on your own because of safety or financial reasons, there are other transportation options instead of flying such as taking the train or the bus. With these transportation options, you can also experience South Africa.
