These are the essential vehicle accessories for 4×4 adventurers
South Africa is known throughout the world for having some of the most robust terrain on which to drive.
From undulating hills to vast swathes of arid land, the country is a mecca for 4×4 enthusiasts wanting to put their vehicles to the test in the most challenging conditions.
What is frequently overlooked, however, are the essential accessories every off-roader worth his salt needs to tackle the slopes and creeks. It would not be too far a stretch to suggest that without these one might not be considered a true member of the 4×4 club.
Canopy
Many 4x4s and bakkies do come standard with canopies these days, but it is important that a vehicle is fitted with the correct type to maximise its potential.
A Toyota Hilux canopy, for example, is coated with a UV-resistant gel which prevents flaking and discolouring in warm climates. Canopies on bakkies designed for rugged terrain can also include integrated fresh air ducts and an overhead ceiling console.
Dual battery system
Serious adventurers need as much power as possible, not only for the car itself but to power additional essentials like cellphones, two-way radios and GPS systems. Of course the main focus is on ensuring one is not stuck in the middle of nowhere having to contend with pushing a hefty 4×4.
Jack
It would be presumed that this is the first accessory on the list, but it is surprising how often people are not equipped with a proper jack. One of the more adventurer-friendly jacks is the air jack, a bag is placed under the bakkie and inflated, raising the vehicle to the appropriate level.
Roof rack
It’s an obvious one, but especially for weekends away they are almost a prerequisite. They are particularly necessary if a 4×4 trip is coupled with another activity, such as a canoeing adventure or a bicycling excursion. Essentially motorists should choose racks that are applicable to the activity, and many varieties are available.
