How to purchase a car privately without hassle
Purchasing a vehicle privately can be a hassle, with several compulsory checks and plenty of paperwork to be completed, but Gumtree Autos, South Africa’s busiest virtual automotive showroom, has made that process a lot simpler and safer by affiliating with DEKRA via the Buy Safe Sell Safe (B3S) service.
DEKRA Automotive is the country’s leading specialist in comprehensive vehicle testing.

Jeff Osborne, Head of Automotive for Gumtree SA, says Gumtree users can still do the work themselves but with B3S “whether you are buying or selling a vehicle it will automatically be inspected by DEKRA and all of the four mandatory tests – safety check, roadworthy, multi-point check and a technical inspection – will be completed as part of the deal”.
This B3S service costs R995 per auto and comes with a DEKRA/AA Approved badge which can be posted to enhance the credibility of the sale.
Buy Safe Sell Safe transactions also offer secure payments through Deloitte’s and ownership verification by TransUnion. Registration with B3S also provides a guarantee that a willing buyer will be found within seven days.
How does it work?
B3S has a national database of willing buyers waiting for all types of vehicles and once you have registered, your vehicle will be marketed nationwide via Gumtree Auto. During this time, your vehicle will be tested and safety checked by DEKRA, and once the most competitive price is secured, B3S will conduct a buyer credibility check as well as verify that you are the rightful owner of the vehicle being sold. Once the deal is finalised, Deloitte will manage the transfer of payment from buyer to seller and B3S will administer the handing over of the vehicle.
Osborne says B3S offers online vehicle sellers “huge time-saving, great peace of mind and a secure and transparent process”.
