Regulations for vehicles crossing South Africa’s borders
If you headed across the border to Mozambique or Namibia or the likes, please ensure you know the regulations for vehicles crossing South Africa’s borders. According to TourismUpdate, these regulations are not new but are being actively enforced.
So what do you need to know?
Drivers of South African-registered vehicles crossing SA borders must carry and present a certified copy of vehicle registration/vehicle licence papers at the border posts.
Motorists must also have in his or her possession confirmation that their insurance company has been informed that the vehicle will be going across our borders. If the car is being financed, the driver must present a certified letter from the bank giving authorisation to take the vehicle across the border and must indicate dates of travel. Both the bank letter and licence papers should be signed by a Commissioner of Oaths.
If you are no the owner of the vehicle you will need an affidavit giving authorisation from the owner to take the vehicle abroad. The same applies if the car is a rental, you will need the rental company to provide you with a letter granting you permission to take the car across the border.
As mentioned, these regulations are not new, however they were only applied when a driver looked suspicious or during crime prevention operations. An SAPS policewoman from the Oshoek-Ngwenya (Swaziland) says that you will need to have your vehicle documentation available for inspection on request.
