Want to drive a convertible? Consider this before you do!
Who doesn’t love the idea of the wind blowing in your hair as you cruise along the coast on a sunny day in a stylish convertible? There is something just so glamourous about a convertible. However, there are few things to consider before purchasing one, especially if you are anything like our online editor Juliet McGuire who finds herself a little bit more like Bridget Jones than Grace Kelly in a convertible.
Rob Handfield-Jones, managing director of www.driving.co.za, gives his tips on things to consider before buying a convertible plus a few from the WOW team.
Hard top vs soft top
A hard top increases the chassis rigidity when in place; is good for control; reduces wind noise; weighs more; offers the comfort of a coupé; faulty stowage mechanisms can be expensive to repair.
A soft top has no structural integrity which makes it hard to control; noisy; weighs less; vintage look.
Luggage space
Most convertibles have limited boot space when the top is down. Does it offer you enough space to carry everything you need? Always assess the boot space with the roof lowered.
Wind
Make sure your convertible has a wind deflector that reduces wind noise and turbulence, to protect your hearing.
Protection
Does it offer roll-over protection, should you have an accident?
Weather
Weather can be quite a issue with a convertible. “A convertible in summer is like a chip fryer for humans,” says Handfield-Jones, “so make sure you wear a hat or cap, and apply sufficient sunblock.”
Safety
Our experience here at WOW is that convertibles aren’t always the safest option. It is no fun being stopped at a red traffic light and being hounded by the beggars or hawkers. You can’t just wind up your window and so you become a rather vulnerable target. Also, a soft top can easily be torn and broken in to.
Glamour
It is not always the best idea to get your hair done and then step in to a topless car. If you are one who enjoys your hair in the perfect place, steer clear of convertibles.
Convertible cars are a great luxury to have, but just be sure that the car you drive suits your lifestyle!
