The video titled Alcohol and Roads Don’t Mix – with a warning of graphic images has been released by the Western Cape Government’s road safety campaign, Safely Home.

The Ubuthakathi (sorcery) television advertisement campaign portrays (in an extremely graphic way), the dangers created when alcohol and the roads mix.

The video was released on 1 December following the success of their previous video, The First Kiss. The focus of the video is to show the way pedestrians are often killed in the province.

A statement released by the Minister of Transport and Public Works, Donald Grant said, “more than 600 pedestrians are killed on the Western Cape roads every year”. With the majority of pedestrians and drivers  under the influence when the incidents occurred.

According to road death statistics, the pedestrian demographic most at risk are black and coloured men between the ages of 19 and 29.

The multimedia campaign will be aired on television, radio, in cinemas as well as on billboards and online over the festive season (December and January) and then again in March 2017 during the Easter holiday.

The Western Cape Government encourages #BoozeFreeRoads this holiday.
