Just how bad is Cape Town traffic?
To see how bad Cape Town traffic really is, we looked to TomTom’s annual congestion index for answers! As it turns out, Cape Town ranks quite high!

Out of the 146 major cities covered by the index, Cape Town is ranked 55! Making Cape Town traffic the worst in the country, while Johannesburg comes in at 77 – just over 20 places behind!
According to TomTom, Cape Town traffic relates to a 29% overall congestion rate. They use the follow figures to infer this value:
Congestion level on highways : 21%
(This is defined as the increase in time it takes you to travel a certain distance (along a highway) in traffic, relative to how long that would take you if there was no traffic.)
Congestion Level on non-highways 32%
(This is defined as the increase in time it takes you to travel a certain distance (along non-highways) in traffic, relative to how long that would take you if there was no traffic.)
