Security measures stepped up on the notorious N2
The ‘N2 incidents‘ have become so common that there was a meeting held with Minister Daniel Plato, the MEC for Safety and Security in the Western Cape and twelve members of his security cluster as well as other representatives to discuss preventative measures.
These attacks have become commonplace on the N2. Incidents have occurred on the Westbound and Eastbound sections of the N2, both inbound and outbound from Cape Town International Airport. There has been dozens of violent accounts, and sadly last week a fatality occurred.
For now it has been decided that:
Patrols by the traffic department, the metro police and the SAPS will be increased to a 24 hour saturation level on both the Eastern and Western sections of N2. Particular attention would be given to the known Hotspots. All large rocks, concrete blocks, broken toilets, half bricks and large stones would removed from the hotspots and their surrounds. Minister Plato will be contacting the Provincial Commissioner of Police in the Western Cape, Lieutenant General Lamoer, in an attempt to forge a more collaborative approach to resolving the N2 crime escalation.
Lighting in the vicinity of known hotspot areas would also be improved. Existing CCTV cameras would be upgraded and, if necessary, new CCTV cameras will be fitted to cover all known Hotspot areas. The fences between the N2 and the informal settlements adjacent to the Hotspot areas would be repaired and maintained and known escape routes would be blocked with barbed wire.
People are encouraged to contact the City of Cape Town emergency control room at 021 480 7700 followed by 086 18 911 18 (CSO Community Security Organisation) in the event of an emergency. If you see any suspicious behaviour such as a vehicle stopped on the side of the highway or anybody walking, running or cycling on the highway, you are also urged to contact these numbers. Even if you’re unsure of the situation, you should still make the emergency control room aware. You might save a life!
We also have a complete list of emergency numbers and tips of what to do when driving on the N2.
