Matric bus ‘thief’ hero or criminal?
A pupil from Betty’s Bay, Western Cape, “stole” a bus to make sure he and his fellow learners were on time for their exam.
IOL has reported that since the story broke on Monday, Le-Aan Adonis, 20, has become an overnight hero and has been approached for interview and even has his own hashtag on social media.
The reason he drove the bus was due to the bus driver failing to show up. Adonis decided to take matters in to his own hands and got behind the wheel of the idling bus. A few metres from Hawston Secondary School, a traffic cop pulled him over. Adonis has been fined R5 000 for driving without a licence but the people of Betty’s Bay are so impressed with him that they are wanting to raise funds to pay his fine. Adonis says he didn’t realise the impications of his actions, “I just thought I would have to rewrite the subject if we were late.”
What do you think? Should Adonis have been given a fine?
IOL reports that the bus driver who was late apparently due to car troubles will appear at a disciplinary hearing today for leaving the bus in the pupils’ care. Donovan Hanekom, owner of Hanekom’s Transport, has undertaken to contribute to Adonis’ fine.
