R750m to be spent to alleviate Cape Town traffic
Since the beginning of the year I have noticed the traffic in Cape Town just getting worse and worse. It used to be one of the many things that set us apart from Johannesburg, we didn’t sit in traffic…even at 5pm. But now, it seems no matter what time of the day it is, you are likely to get stuck somewhere.
Thankfully, the City of Cape Town has revealed a long term strategy to combine bus and train services under one ticketing system in an attempt to streamline the inner-city commute.
EWN has reported that over the next five years, the Municipality will spend R750 million to try and alleviate traffic congestion and improve public transport.
The City’s Brett Herron said, “The idea is as Golden Arrow renews their fleet and when Metrorail improves their services over the next few years, our residents will start to see the public transport network as one network.
“And when we introduce the ticketing and an aligned timetable, commuters will really be able to travel from one part of the city to the other on a MyCiti network.”
It was also reported that wifi will be made available on MyCiti busses in the hope to get people out of their cars and in to the busses.
The private sector has also been called on to consider flexi time for employees and to introduce incentives for staff to use public transport.
