Cape Town officially most congested city in SA!
If you’re anything like me then you’re probably contemplating sleeping at work to avoid the ridiculously high volumes of traffic causing massive delays in Cape Town lately.
As someone who four years ago swore never to live in town, alas, I have now given in and relocated.
This after I calculated that living 21km’s from work meant that I was spending on average (wait for it…) 15.5 days in traffic a year!
It’s just not normal. Not even for one of the most patient and carefree individuals.

Even though I’ve moved closer, what should take me 15 minutes (max) to get home can take up to 45 minutes if De Waal Drive (the road I only need to be on for about 3km’s before turning off it) is busy.
Being stuck in Cape Town traffic is like being forced to spend two hours helping a 3 month old child with absolutely no muscle dexterity thread a needle, while balancing a grain of rice on your nose, telling the child that ‘everything’s gonna be alright’ while actually, you want to scream and kick everything around you. There’s nothing much like it.
When I moan about the traffic to friends in other cities, it’s always the Joburg ones who pipe up and say, “you wouldn’t last a day in JHB”. Ha! Well, apparently Cape Town has now been named the most congested city in South Africa, ranking at 47th in the world.
Thanks to recent information supplied by Tom Tom’s traffic index I can now legitimately say that “Cape Town traffic sucks!”
The Tom Tom traffic index reported that Cape Town and its traffic congestion is now ranked 47th in the world and that this is probably due to the city being favoured as a popular tourist destination.
“TomTom’s mission is to reduce traffic congestion for everyone,” says Carey Dodd, Marketing Manager for TomTom SA. “Road authorities and local governments can use TomTom’s traffic data to better manage traffic flow during the rush hour. We can help businesses plan smarter working hours to help their employees avoid travelling during rush hour. And we give drivers the real-time traffic information and smart routing they need to avoid congested roads and get there faster.”
