GWM to launch battery-powered vehicles to compete with international market

Great Wall Motor, or better known as GWM, has plans to launch a new standalone brand of electric and smart vehicles.

Inspired by the success of electric vehicle leader Tesla, several Chinese carmakers announced plans for new electric brands this year.

Conventional Chinese car companies such as SAIC Motor, Changan Automobile and GAC are hoping to move their products up the value chain as China’s economic planners push new, greener technologies.

GWM will launch a new standalone brand, which is rumoured to be priced higher than existing products.

The new brand, the name of which sources declined to reveal, will include battery-powered SUVs and sedans. It may also include extended-range electric vehicles that allow drivers to charge their cars with electricity or petrol.

Great Wall currently has an affordable electric brand, Ora and is building an EV factory with BMW in China.
