N2/R300 rock throwing update
Last week motorists were again warned about the dangers on the N2 and R300 after a 27 year old man was hit by a rock thrown through his window. According to SA Breaking News, the Western Cape are investigating a case of attempted murder.
The route is being policed by the Western Cape Flying Squad and assisted by patrols from local police stations and other law enforcement agencies, this according to Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Andre Traut.
The 27-year old man has been identified as Julius Jantjies, He was driving with a work colleague, Garth Vermeulen, toward the city when they spotted a man standing in the middle of the road by the R300 off-ramp at Macassar.
Vermeulen told the Cape Times, “We thought it was just another guy waiting for us to drive past so he could run over the road, but as we came closer to him we saw he had a big rock in his hand. As we came past him he threw the rock, the size of a sweet melon, through the front window.”
Jantjies was hit on the head and knocked unconscious. Vermeulen grabbed the steering wheel to avoid hitting a concrete barrier. Other motorists stopped to help them.
Jantjies was taken to Vincent Palotti Hospital where he was placed in an induced coma.
Kenny Africa, the Provincial Traffic chief, has urged motorists to be careful on the N1, N2 and R300. “People can throw stones from anywhere. Motorists must be cautious when they see rocks on the road. Do not stop and get out of your car”, he says.
