Powerful Golf 8 R may come to South Africa at the end of year

South African Volkswagen fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Golf 8 GTI in 2021’s second quarter, but the Golf 8 R is due to hit the country’s shores near the end of the year.

The model is expected to pack no less than 235 kW and 420 Nm of torque, and will accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in less than 5 seconds.

However, there may also be a more powerful Golf 8 R Plus on the cards as discovered by volkswizard. The British manual lists a 2.0-litre TSI ‘DNFF’ engine with power outputs of 245 kW and 420 Nm of torque, and this implies that a more potent Golf R may be coming at some point.

However, there is no official confirmation from Volkswagen on the status of this powerful vehicle.

Local specification and pricing for the Golf 8 R will be revealed closer to launch.
