SA racer will soon join Formula E

Sheldon Van Der Linde announced he will continuing with BMW M Motorsports in the 2021 season as a test and reserve Formula E driver. This will be in conjunction with a full-time GT programme and development with the new M4 GT3.

‘My intention was always to build on a long-term relationship with the brand and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us,’ said Van Der Linde in an Instagram post. He first joined the BMW M Motorsport in 2019 as a works driver and has competed in two seasons in the DMT. He has scooped up one win and one pole position as well as placed on two podiums. This year, he took 6th place in the driver’s standings.

‘Formula E will be a totally new challenge for me. I have never been involved in electric racing and I am really looking forward to the job,’ said Van Der Linde, according to TimesLive. ‘Working on further development of the BMW M4 GT3 is just as exciting. We have already put a lot of work into the car and we will definitely continue to do so next year to make sure that we can hand over as successful a car as possible to customers in 2022.

‘I am very happy to be able to continue driving for BMW Motorsport in these challenging times. It feels like a second family for me,’ he concluded.

Pending approval from FIA, who is responsible for the issuing of Formula E drivers licences, Van Der Linde will be present at the Formula E season-opener on January 16-17 2021.
