SA's most-loved bakkie revealed

A bakkie is the quintessential South African vehicle, and this is reflected in both new and used vehicle sales data by AutoTrader.

Its 2020 calendar year analysis revealed that the most-searched-for bakkie in the country was none other than the popular Toyota Hilux.

The Hilux is also the top-selling vehicle in South Africa, and also the top-selling model in the entire Toyota range. A total of 3233 Toyota Hilux bakkies were sold in December 2020 alone.

These sales, along with 1221 Hiace van sales, accounted for Toyota’s 45.7% share in the commercial vehicle sector of South Africa in December 2020.

The Hilux was also the most-searched-for bakkie in 2019.

The Toyota Hilux is not just South Africa’s favourite bakkie, but has also made a killing in sales across countries such as Australia, Peru and Argentina.

The first-ever Hilux was launched in 1968 and is now at its eighth generation.
