Sixteen-year-old becomes first female driver to join Ferrari Driver Academy

Sixteen-year-old Maya Weug has made history as the first female driver to join the Ferrari Driver Academy. The Netherlands native was selected from the final stage of the Girls on Track – Rising Stars initiative, a program run jointly by Ferrari and motorsport body FIA.

The evaluation camp took place in Maranello, Italy, where Weug beat competition from 17-year-old Doriane Pin, 14-year-old Antonella Bassani and 15-year-old Julia Ayoub.

Weug has been driving since she started karting at the age of seven, and has now earned her place in the Academy, which prepares drivers for potential careers in motorsport.

“I will never forget this day! I am so happy to be the first female driver to join the Ferrari Driver Academy,” said Weug. “I will give my all to show the people who believed in me that I deserve to wear the Ferrari Driver Academy uniform and I can’t wait to come to Maranello to start preparing for my first season of single-seater racing.”
