Volkswagen's Tiguan SUV gets a makeover

The Volkswagen Tiguan was first launched in 2008 and is finally receiving a whole new look for 2021.

Over six million Tiguan units have been sold globally since its launch and in South Africa alone 41 000 units were sold. The Tiguan was the best selling SUV in South Africa last year with 4280 units sold.

The SUV is manufactured at four Volkswagen plants namely, China, Germany, Mexico and Russia. The Tiguan will be available on sale in the third quarter of this year.

The Tiguan will come with a variety of new interior features such as a new steering wheel with touch controls. One of the eye-catching exterior features of the Tiguan is its redesigned front bumper. It has a new radiator grille with wider LED headlights.

New metallic colours for the Volkswagen Tiguan is Ginger Brown, Kings Red, Lapiz Blue, Night Shade Blue and Dolphin Grey.

The model boasts safety features such as Lane Change Assist and Side Assist helping drivers to stay in their lane. It has Emergency Braking with Front Assist to detect any obstacles in front of the vehicle.

The Tiguan line-up is available in three model ranges called the Tiguan, the Tiguan Life and the Tiguan R-Line.

The base derivative Tiguan comes standard with 17-inch Montana alloy wheels, LED headlights, leather multi-function steering wheel, cruise control and the new MIB3 Infotainment system.

The Tiguan Life derivative comes standard with 18-inch Frankfurt alloy wheels, LED headlights (with cornering lights), Park Distance Control front and rear and an electric boot for easy opening and closing. Other optional alloy wheels for this derivative is 18-inch Nizza and 19-inch Victoria Falls.

The Tiguan R-Line comes standard with 19-inch Valencia alloy wheels, ambient lighting with 30 different interior lighting options, leather seats with the R-Line logo on the two front seats, Active Info Display, multi-functional steering wheel with touch and swiping actions and keyless entry. Other optional wheels for the R-Line is 20-inch Suzuka alloy wheels in chrome and black.

The Tiguan has optional features to add such as a panoramic sunroof, a towbar, a black style package including, black roof rails and decorative trims, black exterior mirror housing, privacy glass for the rear windows and black 20-inch Suzuka alloy wheels.

Other optional features include Discover Pro entertainment system with wireless App-Connect, Heads-up display, Area view camera system with Park Assist, IQ Drive Package with Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Assist, Park Assist and Autonomous Emergency Braking and a Trailer System which includes Park Assist.

The Tiguan model range will be available in three engine line-ups carried over from the previous model. Two petrol engines and one diesel delivering 110 to 162 kW. The 1.4 TSI engine is mated to a six-speed DSG gearbox delivering 110kW and torque of 250Nm. Its top speed is 200km/h, it goes from 0 – 100km/h in 9.2 seconds.

The only 2.0 TDI diesel engine delivers 130kW with 380Nm of torque mated to a seven-speed DSG gearbox with a top speed of 207km/h reaching 100km/h in 8.3 seconds. The most powerful 2.0 TSI engine boasts 162kW with 350Nm of torque reaching 100 km/h in  6.5 seconds.  Its seven-speed DSG gearbox enables a top speed of 225km.

Pricing for the new Tiguan will be revealed closer to its launch date.
