The ”how to” guide for driving in the rain
It’s that time of the year where the weather is starting to turn and we all want to avoid driving due to heavy rainfall, but driving is a part of daily life. Here are our step for step guide on how to stay safe on the road in this wet weather.
1. Keep both hands on the steering wheel at all times and don’t get distracted by things such as your cellphone. This is no time for texting – there is never time for texting when driving!
2. Turn on your headlights, even if it’s just drizzling.
3. Keep a minimum of a good three-car length from the car in front of you. Stopping suddenly on a wet road is not the same as stopping when it’s dry.
4. Drive at or below the speed limit. You should be able to see far enough in front of you to appropriately make driving decisions. Like we mentioned, it takes longer to stop or adjust in wet weather.
5. Always avoid flooded roads.
6. Turn on the demister if the windshield begins to fog.
7. Be aware that brakes can be affected by water.
8. Watch for splashing from potholes and pools of water that accumulate at clogged storm drain pipes and low areas of the pavement.
9. Use a rain repellent product on side windows and mirrors to clear standing raindrops.
10. Don’t follow large trucks or buses too closely. The spray created by their large tyres reduces your vision. Take care when passing them as well; if you must pass, do so quickly and safely.
11. Always make sure the wipers are in working condition.
12. Never drive beyond the limits of visibility when it’s misty or at night.
14. And last, but not least, be aware of hydroplaning. This is where your vehicle travels on top of the water and has no or very little contact with the road. Your traction is reduced significantly. To safely get out of a hydroplaning situation let off the accelerator and steer straight or slightly in the direction you must go. Avoid making sudden motions and remain calm. Do not break on a puddle.
Be safe. Be careful. And don’t take chances.
