Two beers and you still good to drive? Think again!
Driving while under the influence of alcohol is one of the biggest threats to road safety in our country. Research indicates that 50% of people who die on the roads have a blood alcohol concentration above 0.05 grams per 100 millilitres. The legal blood alcohol limit in South Africa is less than 0.05 g per 100 ml. One unit of alcohol is equal to a blood alcohol level of about 0.02g.
Here we give you a list of alcohol per unit (this is merely an indication and can depend on many different factors):
1 x glass of wine = 1 unit
1 x shot = ½ unit
1 x spirit cooler =1.25 units
1 x beer = 1.5 units or possibly more
1 x cider = 2 units
1 x cocktail = Between 2 and 4 units
Next time you go out and have a drink, try to keep this in mind if you are driving. And, if you plan to have a rough night out, rather get a designated driver or call a taxi service. You don’t want to put your life and the life of others in danger!
