City of Cape Town to offer card payment facilities at vehicle registration centres
Up until now motorists have had to ensure that they have the correct amount of cash on them to pay for licences at registration offices. But the City of Cape Town has started piloting the use of card payment facilities at its Civic Centre office and plans to extend the service to other customer centres across the metro.
The first day of the pilot (27 June 2016) saw more than 100 processed credit and debit card transactions while the use of card payments will continue for a few more days before being made available at other MVR offices across the Cape.
According to baydu.co.za it could take around two months before card payment services are made possible elsewhere in the Cape while system upgrades take place.
Payments of up to R5 000 via credit or debit cards will be accepted while the City will reclaim banking fees for anything over that, in which case it would be in your best interest to make EFT payments for larger amounts.

The City’s Executive Deputy Mayor, Alderman Ian Neilson, said that online payment improvements have been complemented by the improved functionality at the City’s own customer centres.
