Officers throughout the Western Cape are showing no mercy for illegal operators of school transport vehicles, three of which have already been suspended.

The safety and roadworthiness of these school transport vehicles -which transport students to and from school – needs to be of the highest standard.
In a ‘blitz’ operation conducted on Wednesday – the first day of school – officers suspended the licenses of three buses in Worcester.

The spokesperson for the Provincial Transport Department, Byron la Hoe, said that these suspensions would remain firmly in place until all of the drivers have renewed the licenses and could certify that each vehicle was completely roadworthy.
A total of seventeen school transport vehicles were stopped and inspected throughout schools in the Western Cape. Namely, Overhex Primary School, Breede River High School, Esselen High School and Worcester Secondary School.

La Hoe stated that they have issued thirty-one fines amounting to R32 400 for these various violations. These include, operating a school transport vehicle without a license permit, overloading and various other vehicle defects.
School transport vehicles and their operators need to comply with the provisions of the National Land Transport Act.

“Any parent or caregiver with any learner road safety concerns should speak to the school principal who can ask the Western Cape education department for assistance,”
La Hoe said.
