Volkswagen SA certified as Top Employer for 10th consecutive year

Volkswagen South Africa has been certified as a Top Employer for the 10th year thanks to their consistent efforts in keeping their staff safe and having an excellent work environment.

The accolade is an internationally recognised certification rewarded by the Top Employers Institute. Other considerations to this award are the wellbeing of employees, continuous improvement and the development of talent within the organisation.

The Top Employers for 2021 was announced at the end of January after the event had to be postponed in 2020 due to the pandemic.

Despite the challenging year that 2020 was, VWSA showed consistent commitment and going above and beyond to ensure the safety and wellbeing of its employers.

“To receive the Top Employer certification for 10 consecutive years is a milestone and a testament to our commitment to continuously improving our value proposition to our employees,” said Thabo Nkoane, Human Resources Director for VWSA.

“I am proud to be part of an organisation that has been recognised consistently for its efforts to put people first, by building a culture of excellence and empowerment.”

VWSA responded to COVID-19 and prepared for level 5 of lockdown by ensuring their employees were safe.

This process included:

– Installing extensive signage and sanitising stations

– Implementing body temperature checks at all entrances

– Redesigning workspaces to allow for physical and social distancing.

Employees who returned were immediately re-oriented to the new workplace through information sessions and a booklet elaborating on all new protocols. They were also issued with a digital thermometer and disposable face masks.

Throughout the pandemic, VWSA’s employees received medical and psychological support from the in-house Wellness Centre.

The Centre also tested 3 734 employees for Covid-19, before the company re-opening in January.

All production employees and office staff that returned to company sites all had to take a test, though staff are still encouraged to work from home where/if possible.
