Thousands of Toyota Corollas getting recalled in SA
Last year, Takata, the massive vehicle parts supplier, became subject to a huge controversy as its airbags were faulty. Japanese car makers recalled 2.9 million vehicles globally on Monday over Takata air bags that are at risk of exploding and shooting shrapnel at passengers and drivers. This sounds quite frightening.
Toyota has also been affected by this in SA. On Monday, Toyota announced it will recall vehicles affected including those sold in South Africa. However, the defected airbag situation only affects Toyota Corollas built from April 2002- June 2003. So, if you own a Toyota manufactured in that time period, your car will most likely be recalled. There are just over 4000 Toyotas that needs to be recalled in SA.
Toyota announced that, “Toyota will call customers based on VIN numbers and try to track down current owners, since most of these cars would probably have been sold as second-hand, to come in to dealers…”
Honda also confirmed that it will recall more than two million vehicles due to an airbag defect that could pose a fire risk. Luckily, this doesn’t affect SA- it’s mostly Hondas in USA and Japan.
